چکیده

We describe the prospects for optical cooling of magnetically trapped atomic hydrogen. We analyze the performance of an optical system currently under development in our laboratory and present calculations for the optical cooling rate. We conclude that by using optical techniques hydrogen can be cooled to below 10 mK while the density is simultaneously boosted to approximately 1014 cm. The same system can be used for thermometry down to temperatures well into the microkelvin regime.

States of an Ensemble of Two-Level Atoms with Reduced Quantum Uncertainty: Auxiliary Material

The parameters of the near-confocal Fabry-Pérot resonator at the wavelengths of trap light (851 nm) and probe light (780 nm) are summarized in table A1. Both trap laser and probe laser are locked to the resonator via Pound-Drever-Hall locks of 1 MHz loop bandwidth. Another feedback loop stabilizes the resonator frequency to an atomic transition in Rb. The atoms are loaded into the standing-wave...

Two-dimensional atomic lithography by submicrometer focusing of atomic beams

We analyze a method for serial writing of arbitrary two-dimensional patterns using optical focusing of a collimated atomic beam. A spatial light modulator is used in a side illumination geometry to create a localized optical spot with secondary maxima that are well separated from the central peak. Numerical simulation of a lithography experiment using a magneto-optical trap as a source of cold ...

Loading of a cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide

We discuss recent experimental progress on the realization of a commonly called continuous atom laser. We demonstrate experimentally the continuous and pulsed loading of a slow and cold atomic beam into a magnetic guide. The slow beam is produced using a vapor loaded laser trap, which ensures two-dimensional magneto-optical trapping, as well as cooling by a moving molasses along the third direc...

Magneto-optical trapping of holmium atoms

We demonstrate sub-Doppler laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of the rare-earth element holmium. Atoms are loaded from an atomic beam source and captured in six-beam σ+ − σ− molasses using a strong J = 15/2 ↔ J = 17/2 cycling transition at λ = 410.5 nm. Due to the small difference in hyperfine splittings and Landé g factors in the lower and upper levels of the cooling transition the MOT...

An experimental test of the weak equivalence principle for antihydrogen at the future FLAIR facility

We present new experimental ideas to investigate the gravitational interaction of antihydrogen. The experiment can first be performed in an off-line mirror measurement on hydrogen atoms, as a testing ground for our methods, before the implementation with antihydrogen atoms. A beam of hydrogen atoms is formed by launching a cold beam of protons through a cloud of trapped electrons in a nested Pe...
